From scrolling through social media on your mobile phones to watching your favourite shows on a TV, from online classes to work from home, from consulting your doctor over a video call to shopping for daily needs over the internet, digital screens have become an intrinsic part of our lives in present times.

This is a digital modern era and to get even some of our necessary things done, we rely on digital screens. The time spent on digital screens is quite high for most of us. The increasing screen time has caught the eyes of medical experts and studies are being conducted at an extensive scale to find out its effects on one’s health – both physical and mental.

Why Is High Screen Time A Concern?

As per an Ofcom study, adults in the UK had an average weekly screen time of 45 hours.

Digital screens are known to emit blue light. Blue light is one of the components in the visible spectrum of light and is characterised by shorter wavelengths and higher energy levels when compared to other components. It is the higher energy levels (higher frequency) of blue light emitted from digital screens that are a cause of concern.

When our eyes are exposed to blue light under certain conditions, it can prove to be harmful to our health. And this is exactly the reason why it is advised to buy blue light blocking glasses and put them on when facing digital screens.

Before we discuss how blue light blocking glasses keep our eyes protected, it is important that we understand how blue light affects our eyes.

Effect Of Blue Light On Our Eyes

It must be noted that digital screens are not the only source of blue light. In fact, the sun is the largest and the only natural source, whereas the other artificial sources include LED bulbs, and fluorescent lamps, among others. Hence, we receive blue light from various sources.

When our body receives blue light in the right amount and at the right time, it is actually good for our body and needed for its proper functioning. This is integral in keeping our circadian rhythm (the natural wake and sleep cycle of our body) aligned and is known to alleviate our mood, keep us active, and facilitate alertness.

In the case of blue light exposure from digital screens, our eyes are in close proximity to the source, which results in higher stress on our eyes. This is where it gets problematic. In situations of excessive exposure or exposure under dim light conditions, it can cause problems like eye strain, dry eyes, headaches, fatigue, and can also disturb our sleep cycle. Long-term exposure can also result in complications such as age-related macular degeneration.

Why You Need Blue Light Glasses

Recently, I bought a new pair of prescription glasses for myself when I went over the internet to buy glasses online in the UK. At the checkout stage, I chose blue light protective lenses, and ever since I have started using them, I feel more refreshed during or after a session on a digital screen.

While it is understood that it is not possible to completely eliminate exposure to digital screens in this digital modern era, taking preventive measures is the way to go. One such preventive measure is using blue light blocking glasses while facing digital screens. But how do blue light glasses work?

The lenses of blue light glasses are specifically designed to filter out the light rays corresponding to the wavelength of blue light, thereby preventing it from striking our eyes. This is made possible by applying a protective coating on the lenses to achieve this function.

It is not that you have to wear blue light glasses only during those times when you are staring at a digital screen. Even if you wear them when you are not using a digital screen, these glasses will do no harm. If you are someone who wears prescription glasses, no need to worry as even prescription pairs come with blue light protective coatings.

Where To Buy Blue Light Glasses?

Now that you know the importance of blue light glasses, it is high time that you add them to your wardrobes. To buy blue light glasses at pocket-friendly prices, it is recommended that you look for them over the internet. You can make incredible savings and also find super stylish pairs here.

To keep it more affordable, you have the option of reglaze glasses service. If you want your existing pair of glasses to be upgraded to blue light glasses, you can get the lenses of your existing pair interchanged by sending them for reglazing. Since the frames remain the same, you have to spend much less than what you would spend on a new pair.

About Specscart.

Specscart. UK is a Manchester-based eyewear store which is trying to change the way people perceive eyeglasses. It was born at the University of Manchester and is quite well-awarded. I came across Specscart’s website after looking for blue light lenses online, and was impressed by their user reviews. They have an in-house lab in Manchester where they glaze all their frames, which helps them achieve 24hr dispatch. The styles are also pocket-friendly, with around 50% less prices than high street.
