Electrical transformers are a vital piece of engineering and equipment today. While the technology itself can be traced back to the late 1800s, electric transformers have changed — and improved — immensely since their invention and are especially useful in many ways today.

Designed primarily to moving power from one circuit to another efficiently, electric transformers are vital today in a wide range of industries, especially in large scales. Electrical transformers also come in a wide range of types and offer a wide gamut of advantages and applications.

What Is An Electrical Transformer?

An electrical transformer essentially functions on the principle of induction. Electrical transformers are used mainly to transforming and transferring power between circuits without loss of energy or any changes in frequency. Over the ages, the efficiency of electrical transformers has drastically risen while they have gotten smaller in size.

Electrical transformers are primarily made up of three components:

  • The core, which makes space for magnetic flux to take place.
  • The primary winding, which is responsible for receiving input from an alternating current source.
  • The secondary winding, which is responsible for taking electricity from the primary winding and supplying it to the electronic devices, or the electric load.

Electrical conductors such as copper and aluminium are used in electrical transformers to create a mechanism of mutual induction. These conductors are magnetically joined, which allows the electrical transformer to move electricity through magnetic and electrical coupling.

Types Of Electrical Transformers

Electrical transformers come in a wide range of types today. These include:

  • Step up and step down electrical transformers, which are used primarily to cope with voltage fluctuations to stabilise power supplies.
  • Three-phase and single-phase electrical transformers are extremely cost-effective and can be further divided into two types. They are extremely portable and quite easy to transport.
  • Oil-cooled and dry-type electrical transformers refer specifically to the cooling systems used in the transformer. While oil-cooled electrical transformers make use of oil for cooling, dry-type electrical transformers make use of air for cooling.
  • Power, distribution, and instrument electrical transformers are useful for high power loads and can be used to provide a buffer to homes and commercial enterprises to stabilise the power supplies before they reach users.
  • Two winding and auto-winding electrical transformers function depending on the ratio of the voltage in the power supply.
  • Outdoor and indoor electrical transformers, as their name itself suggests, are specially engineered to function outdoors and indoors respectively.

Applications Of Electrical Transformers

With the tectonic shifts in technology over the last century, electrical transformers today have a wide range of applications and can be used to fulfil many ends, including:

  • Use in industrial and power plants to ensure robust and stable power supplies of electrical power.
  • Stabilising and controlling high voltage power supplies.
  • Creating a bridge between low-power electrical supplies and a higher load requirement.
  • Use as step-up and step-down devices in electrical power supplies.

Advantages Of Electrical Transformers

Electrical transformers also come with many advantages. While their primary function is to provide a stable and robust bridge between power supplies and the supplied load, they also have other vital advantages. Some of these include:

  • They offer a prominent level of control and stability to unstable voltage and electrical transmissions.
  • They do not require any time to start up and begin working.
  • They automatically provide earthing through their structure.
  • They are not dangerous, as there are no moving parts in electrical transformers.
  • They are extremely efficient.
  • They require almost no maintenance and very little investment for purchase and installation.
  • They can provide much-needed protection to electronic devices at home as well as in commercial and industrial enterprises, especially sensitive and expensive electronic equipment.

Invest in High-Quality Transformers

Electrical transformers are vital today to ensure homes, offices, and even large industries, are protected from unstable grid electrical supplies. While they seem intimidating, an investment in electrical transformers will undoubtedly pay off in the long run.
