Is There More You Could Do to Help Refugees?

From war to environmental disasters, there are many reasons why people are forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in another country. Many of us donate money to charity appeals aimed at helping those in such situations, but have you ever wondered if there’s more you could be doing to assist refugees? Sometimes it feels impossible for one person to make a meaningful difference. However, with a bit of effort and dedication, there’s a lot that can be achieved.

So, if you want to do your part for those who are most in need, here are some ideas to get you inspired. Even the smallest action can mean everything to one person.

Volunteer

In addition to donating your money to nonprofit organisations that help refugees, you can also donate your time. This could be in all sorts of different ways depending on where you live and the skills you have. For instance, you could do a shift in a charity shop, help to organise collections and delivery of donations such as food and hygiene products, or assist with admin tasks in your spare time. Get in touch with a local group and see what opportunities they have available. There are usually both long-term and one-off volunteering roles to choose from, so there should be something that fits your work schedule and any other existing commitments you have. It can be a great way to make new friends, too!

Foster a sanctuary-seeking child

One way to make a definite positive change in the life of a refugee is to foster a sanctuary-seeking child. Agencies such as thefca.co.uk can arrange for you to take care of an unaccompanied young person in your own home, offering them a safe, caring, and stable environment in which to live. You can also help them to adjust to life in a new country and cope with any trauma they may have experienced that forced them to leave their home. You will have all the training and guidance you need to support them, plus a network of foster parents and experts to connect with.

Get involved with political activism

The attitude and actions of politicians make a big difference in how much assistance refugees receive. That’s why it is so important to show the government that this is an issue people care about and want them to support. You can get involved with the political side of helping refugees through actions such as writing to your local MP, attending demonstrations, and signing petitions. The more people do this, the more effective the impact will be. So encourage your friends to do the same!

Fundraise

Charities and other nonprofit organisations rely heavily on donations from the public to help refugees. In addition to donating money yourself, you can encourage others to do the same by getting involved in fundraising activities. This could be by collecting money on the street (be sure you have the necessary permission), leaving a charity pot out at work for people to pop their spare change into, or setting up a specific event such as a bake sale. You could even get friends and family members to sponsor you to run a marathon or complete another similar challenge!

Work for a charity

If helping refugees is a cause that you are passionate about and want to dedicate yourself to, working for a relevant organisation is a fantastic choice. This enables you to spend all of your working hours fighting to make the world a better place for vulnerable people. Most charities have a wide range of different jobs available, from campaigning to admin and fundraising, so you’re sure to be able to find a role that matches your interests and skills. Browse some job websites and also charities’ websites directly and see what sort of positions catch your eye.

Spread the word

Another simple action you can take to help refugees is to raise awareness of their plight. This can then have a snowball effect by inspiring other people to take action in the ways described above. If you use social media, consider posting about the issue every now and then. It doesn’t have to take over your feed or focus only on the negatives. Use it as a way to spread the message in a thoughtful manner, and encourage your followers to practise kindness. Just be sure to check the sources of everything you post carefully!
