The Terminator and its sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day are two of the most iconic science fiction films ever made. The two seminal offerings from James Cameron spawned a sprawling franchise, however, none of the subsequent films have managed to live up to the high standards of the early titles.
It was recently reported that Cameron was keen on rebooting the Terminator series completely. The acclaimed director is working on a script, and the new movie will include a fresh cast and storyline. This refresh could be exactly what the franchise needs to continue long into the future.
Terminator Franchise is Still Strong Despite Weak Sequels
Since the Cameron originals, there have been four sequels in the Terminator franchise. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was released in 2003, and this was followed by Terminator Salvation in 2009. More recently, Terminator Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate hit screens in 2015 and 2019, respectively. All of these pictures performed reasonably well at the box office, but none managed to top the $523.7 million that Judgement Day earned in 1991.
The main problem with the sequels is that they were not well-received critically and led to some confusing lore in the franchise. This wasn’t helped when the more recent offerings tried to retcon certain aspects of their predecessors.
Despite the post-Cameron films being underwhelming, the franchise itself still has a lot of money-making potential. This is why Cameron and Skydance Media want to keep it alive. For example, the series has lent itself perfectly to games over the decades, and there’s great scope for future offerings.
Some of the best titles on the market include the mobile game Terminator Genisys: Future War and the slot game The Terminator Win & Spin. Players who play online slots will notice that the thumbnail of the latter game stands out in jam-packed lists of games, with the Terminator robot instantly recognisable. The title has long been one of the most played games on the market.
Cameron Likely to Turn Attention to Terminator After Avatar Sequels
Cameron has expressed his interest in rebooting the Terminator series and said that some of the recent pictures had made mistakes. According to a report, the esteemed director confessed that he thought it had been a foolish decision to bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton in Dark Fate. It’s now clear that if the 69-year-old makes another picture, it will have an entirely new cast.
Although there are rumours that Cameron is currently penning a screenplay for a Terminator reboot, it could be a long time before it’s ready for the screen. The director is busy with other projects at the moment, scheduled to hit cinemas in 2025 and 2029, respectively. Therefore, the next Terminator movie could conceivably be released in the 2030s.
The thought of a brand new Terminator reboot that aims to right the wrongs of the recent sequels is tantalising. It’s even more exciting to think that Cameron could potentially be in the director’s chair, working on his own script. A fresh offering could reinvigorate the franchise and help it flourish for many more years.
