First off, we have horse racing. The UK is known for its love for this sport, and is also home to some of the most prestigious events. These include the well-known Cheltenham Festival, Royal Ascot, Grand National, Coral Scottish Grand National Meeting, Boodles May Festival, Dante Festival, and King George Weekend.

Let’s take Cheltenham Festival as an example. The attendance for this 4-day festival goes over 70,000 for each day. As a way to provide visitors with a better experience, the organizers of this event decided to reduce the maximum capacity.

Rugby Union

Even though it may not be as popular as football or horse racing, rugby union is still a commonly watched sport on the island. The English national team competes in the Six Nations Championship and many popular club teams compete in international tournaments such as the European Rugby Champions Cup.

There are over 340,000 registered players and over 2,000 clubs in this sport. These numbers make it obvious that rugby union is no joke, as many residents are more than fond of watching it and being actively involved in it.

Cricket

Finally, we have a sport that not a lot of people talk about but it is extremely popular in the UK. We are talking about cricket. According to search volumes, cricket is actually the second most popular sport in the country, trailing right behind football.

On average, it generates more than 500,000 searches online each month. In 2021, there were around 300,000 active players in this sport. Even though the number has decreased since 2009, it remains a popular choice among young people that are in pursuit of a professional sports career.

Some of the domestic competitions include the Royal London One-Day Cup, the Women’s Twenty20 Cup and T20 Blast.

On a national level, the English cricket team won the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup and was a runner-up in 2016. The team has played over 1,000 matches, and won almost 400.

If there’s one thing that the list above can tell, the UK is pretty much home to many sports. Residents here are no strangers to football, tennis, cricket, MMA, rugby union, and horse racing. Just because the above-mentioned is the most popular sports, that doesn’t mean that they are everything, British people only watch. On the contrary, there are plenty of other honourable mentions.
