Five Ways to Motivate Your Children to Exercise

With the summer finally over and the cooler air telling us we’re well into autumn, it will be a lot harder as a parent to make sure that your children are getting outside and getting enough exercise. This process is essential both for their physical and mental health. Nonetheless, with the right encouragement and suitable activities, you will be able to find ways to get your children to exercise without even thinking about how much work they are putting in. If you are interested in learning more, it is worth reading this complete guide that has been written for your reading pleasure.

Engage in Fun Activities

If you just force your child to run or walk, they are going to get bored quickly. That’s why it makes sense to make sure that they engage in activities that genuinely stimulate them and that they truly enjoy. Before you take your child outside, it might be worth asking them what they would like to do and then going out and doing it together. For example, one of the most fun activities that get children wanting to go out and play without even realising they are exercising is skateboarding. Just make sure to invest in skate helmets in the UK in order to keep them adequately safe from any head injuries.

Make It Competitive

People love competition, which you should be able to pick if you have ever been to a school sport’s day. You will realise how important competition is to get kids motivated to exercise properly and challenge themselves to be their best physical version of themselves. That’s why it might be worth making it into more of a competition, whether it’s between yourself and your children — although you should give them a genuine chance of winning — or between each other.

Making it into more of a game with clear winners and losers will motivate them to become far more competitive as a result. You can even have awards for the winners to make it much more of an incentive-based activity. The important part is to not single one child out for being incapable of winning — try and find a way that everyone can be a winner by the end.

Minimise Screen Time

Suppose you want your children to be motivated to go outside and exercise correctly. In that case, you need to defeat the biggest impediment to that progress, namely spending too much time on their mobile phones, iPad, and game consoles. That is especially true when you consider that over-use of screen time has been linked to all sorts of mental health problems in children. By limiting their screen time to just a couple of hours a day, your children are more likely to have much richer lives!

Organise Playdates

If you want your child to go outside and exercise without genuinely thinking about what they are doing, it might be a great idea to organise a proper playdate. That is because they will see this more like a meet-up with a friend instead of an attempt to get them outside and play, thus increasing the chances that they will simply engage in activities that are good for them for the sake of it. Additionally, although deaths are incredibly rare, just be aware of the coronavirus risk of children’s playdates and plan accordingly.

Reward Them at the End of the Day

Children love to play and exercise naturally, but it always helps give them as many incentives as possible. That’s why it might be worth saying to your children that if they manage to do a certain amount of exercise in one day, you will reward them in the form of their favourite food or time to let them play their favourite video game. This way, they will form a positive reaction to the concept of exercising, making it more likely that they will want to engage in this activity again and again.

Conclusion

This guide has been created as an overview of how you can get your children out and about and enjoy exercise. To make sure that your endeavours are a success, we suggest you implement every recommendation that has been mentioned.
