A house simply isn’t complete without a roof. Your roof doesn’t only protect you from the elements; it protects all the important structures beneath it that help your house stand. Although your roof gets battered by the heat, rain, snow, and even hail, it’s actually pretty durable. However, a strong roof will only last if you do some maintenance work on it.

If left unnoticed, a roof will give way and will eventually lead to a costly rebuild. Not only that, an old roof can become a hazard for those living underneath. To avoid such problems and headaches, you should do a bit of work on your roof. If you don’t know where to start, you’re in luck. In this article, we’re going to look at five home improvement projects for your roof that are easy to do.

Getting Clean With Your Gutters

Your gutters are responsible for keeping rainwater away from your house. Although they’re built to carry away water, other debris such as dirt, algae, leaves, branches, and even animals can get inside your gutters. Always do at least a monthly or weekly inspection on your roof gutters, just to see what’s inside them.

If there’s too much stuff in them, your gutters can get heavy and can eventually give way. Avoid the hassle and start by cleaning it. Clearing away dead foliage and some algae can be easy. Admittedly, no one wants to clean gutters, especially if there’s a lot in them.

You can call in professionals to do it for you for those needs. If you’re residing in Newport or somewhere nearby, don’t fret. If your gutter needs intensive cleaning or if your roof gets damaged because of it, you can opt for the services of the best roof repairs Newport has to offer.

Checking Your Shingles

Although long roofs are durable, storms and tropical hurricanes can seriously damage them. Extreme heat can also damage your roof. Shingles are flat, usually rectangular, and made up of composite, asphalt, wood, or suitable roofing material. These shingles are installed from the base of the roof going up and often overlap each other to provide maximum coverage.

A single shingle that gets cracked, damaged, or missing isn’t usually the biggest concern, but do take note. Over time, these single pieces can lead to other shingles weakening, increasing the damage done to your roof. As a pre-emptive measure, check your roof for any shingle that’s damaged and replace it immediately.

Trimming and Cutting

Although trees can be a good addition to your lawn, they can become problematic if they’re too close to your roof. Aside from falling leaves and branches that’ll surely get in your gutters, trees can also provide access to critters such as squirrels and raccoons.

These animals can bring in more debris and even live in your gutters. As mentioned above, your gutters can only take in so much weight. As animals can get in, burglars can also use trees to access your home from the windows. Additionally, trees can also block windows and strike down important structures such as power lines and antennas if a storm hits.

Instead of waiting for disaster to strike, you can opt to trim or even cut your tree if it’s too obstructive. If you’re in Sunderland, then you can call experienced tree surgeons Sunderland has. These professionals can handle all your tree problems. Remember, you don’t have to cut your tree all the time. With professional help, you can weigh your options and develop an outcome that’ll benefit everyone and everything, including the tree.

Adding in a Fresh Coat of Paint

The weather can be the harshest thing on this planet. If left unchecked, the weather can bring in normal wear and tear faster to your roof. To protect your roof from the elements, you can add a fresh coat of paint on your roof.

There are typically three types of paint you can apply on your roof, and good news, they’re all waterproof. Here’s a more detailed look at these paints you can apply:

Masonry Paint: Masonry paint uses a mixture of ceramic and latex, and is a good choice for exterior paint. You’ll see a lot of roofs paint with masonry paint as this is considered a universal go-to paint everywhere. You can also use this type of paint for bricks, concrete, and stones, making it a popular choice as well. As masonry paint is waterproof, it’ll significantly help your roof against rainwater hoppers and prevent fungus from growing on the roof as well.

Epoxy Paint: For roofs that experience more rain than usual, epoxy paint is a good choice. Made with epoxy resins, this paint is usually thicker and can get heavy. Epoxy resin is also known for its durable so consider getting it if dampness or rainfall is a common occurrence in your area.

Acrylic Paint: Another good pick for waterproofing your roof is by using elastic acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is easy to use in sprays, brushes, and rollers. It’s odor-free, dries fast, and is a popular choice for both roofs and terraces.

Drainage Maintenance

Although drainage isn’t usually what we hear when talking about the roof, drainage is actually important for it. Ever wonder why a lot of stuff or even just water stays in your gutters? That’s probably because of poor drainage.

Although most architectural designs effectively push away water from your roof, it sometimes isn’t enough if there’s a big downpour and a block in your pipes. Inspect your gutters for pooling and try to pull out some debris if you can. You can also call in a plumber to help you if there’s a build-up in the outlet or pipes.

Takeaway

Roofs are symbolic as they protect those underneath them. Although they’re built to last, a roof can get damaged by natural wear and tear over time. To slow down that process, you should do a bit of work to help protect your roof. The small and easy projects mentioned above can greatly lengthen the lifespan of your roof. With a strong roof, you’ll have no worries when the stormy weather comes.
