Migraine and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) are often linked because of many medical aspects. Not just RLS, but many neurological and psychiatric disorders are associated with migraines.

When an individual has a migraine and some other health disorder, the presence of migraine worsens the health conditions. That simply means that the comorbidity should be discovered to cure migraines. Sometimes, oral treatments like Zopiclone 7.5mg may be prescribed to treat sleep disorders that eliminate other issues like migraine or RLS.

Do you know? Higher migraine frequency correlates with a higher prevalence of RLS, specifically among patients with auras [Source: NCBI]

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

The unpleasant feelings usually experienced during inactivity periods such as nighttime is known as RLS. It is felt most when you try to fall asleep. Such sensations may resolve as soon as you make movements during sleep. However, RLS becomes a reason for insomnia or nighttime awakenings.

What is Migraine?

Migraine is nothing but the painful pulsing sensation of headache on one side of the head. People suffering from migraines often experience extreme sensitivity towards light and sound, nausea, and vomiting too. Such sensation may last for a few hours only or days in a row. One crucial thing about migraine is that its pain may be severe and interfere with routine life activities.

The common thing between RLS and migraines is the aura. It is the sensation felt before or along with the headache. Some medications like Zimovane may help induce better sleep and prevent nighttime awakenings for RLS to be felt less.

Does restless leg syndrome trigger migraines?

As mentioned at the beginning of this blog, migraine is associated with several health disorders, with RLS being one. According to a study, it is commonly found among middle-aged and older adults, especially women. But, no evidence states that RLS causes migraines.

Do all Migraineurs have RLS?

20% of Migraineurs have Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), according to a large study. However, other studies report that only 8% of Migraineurs suffer from RLS. Opposite to this, some small studies report that a massive 40% of Migraineurs have RLS too.

With this stated, we can see that it is impossible to find an association between Migraineurs and RLS. But, the presence of migraine aura may signal the presence of both together.

Three Links between RLS and Migraine

People having migraine problems may suffer from sleep disorders too. These sleep disorders may cause a crawling and tingling sensation in the legs. Similar symptoms are observed among patients having RLS. Thus, we can assume that RLS and migraine have a familiar aura. Let’s dig deep into this with three significant aspects showing links.

Improper Sleep Schedule

Poor sleep quality triggers a lot of health disorders, including migraines. So, if you aren’t sleeping well, you may have migraine, RLS, or both. If a person is making a lot of movements during sleep, it may lead to frequent awakenings at night. Thus, insomnia may follow too.

Medicines like Imovane can help regulate the sleep cycle if you’re experiencing poor sleep quality consistently.

Iron Deficit

RLS and migraine may be linked, and this is stated well by iron deficiency. You won’t believe it, but RLS symptoms worsen because of low iron levels in the body; several studies say this.

Iron deficiency anemia and menstrual migraine are linked too. The acute blood loss caused by menstruation leads to low iron levels. It further triggers migraines when a woman is suffering from end-menstruation migraine.

Dopamine Imbalance

According to some medical experts, dopamine imbalance within the hypothalamus leads to a migraine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating body movements and mood. Drugs binding to dopamine receptors in the brain ease symptoms of RLS.

It’s dopamine responsible for developing migraines because it controls premonitory symptoms like upset stomach, food cravings, and yawning. Dopamine has complex effects on health disorders. Hence, RLS and dopamine connectivity also relates to migraine.

How do sleeping pills help reduce migraine or RLS?

Migraine or RLS may be treated well with sleeping aid medications. Effective ones like Imovane help the patient fall asleep faster and prevent nighttime awakenings, which improves sleep quality in the long run.

As seen above, RLS causes nighttime awakenings because of the painful sensations in the leg movements. Migraine is a headache that may disturb sleep conditions. Thus, using oral treatments for promoting sleep could enhance sleep conditions. Finally, you get to sleep well, and migraine and RLS symptoms dissolve in the long run. You may reach out to your doctor and share if you’re suffering from any sleep disorders. Finding an effective cure on time and following your prescription will only improve your overall health.

What we get to know…

The conclusion is that you should not assume that you must be having RLS if you have a migraine. We’ve also seen that migraine is not the only health condition linked to RLS. The following health conditions also contribute to the development of RLS:

  • Depression
  • Pregnancy
  • Postpartum
  • Anemia
  • Kidney failure
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis

Lastly, RLS can exist alone. It is not apparent that migraine and RLS should exist together. Both can happen alone or jointly, depending on the individual’s health. Also, you may consult your doctor and find an effective treatment like Zopiclone buy. You may then buy Zopiclone online from a reliable website at affordable rates so that you can improve sleep conditions. It will gradually improve medical conditions like RLS and migraine.
