US presidential election occurs every four years on the first Tuesday of November. In other US elections, the candidates are chosen by the citizens of the country. But for US presidential elections, president and vice president are not chosen by the citizens. Instead, they are selected by the electors and the process of choosing a president and vice president is called Electoral College.
The idea of using electors in the next US president comes from the constitution. It is a compromise between the votes of citizens of the US and congress.
